Black Lives Matter: A Statement From Livewire1350

By Morgan Burdick

As a station, we stand by the #blacklivesmatter movement and want to do everything we can to amplify Black voices in our community. Our station would not be where it is today without Black culture, especially music, which has contributed to many of our playlists, gig reviews, and more. We want to give back to a community that has helped us shape the sound of UEA.

Therefore, for the month of June, we will be providing free membership to our station. If you'd like to get involved, email hello@livewire1350.com . We encourage those joining us to donate what they would have spent to some charities we have listed below, or sign petitions that we have also provided the links for. In the coming weeks, we will use our voice as a station to provide resources for education, activism, and mental health in the Black community. We will use our platform to shed light on Black artists, creators, and business owners.

As a community, we must do better to actively oppose racism. We urge other UEA societies and student stations across the UK to do the same.

Donation Links:

SNaPCo: https://www.snap4freedom.org/donate

Based in Atlanta, SnapCo stands for Solutions Not Punishment: supporting Black Transgender and Queer women to break down barriers.

Black Aids Institute: https://blackaids.org/donate/

The Black Aids Institute provides resources to help understand the deep-rooted racial gaps in the American healthcare system. Their mission is to uplift Black voices in the HIV industry and support Black Americans in their quest to find humane medical care.

LGBTQ Freedom Fund: https://www.lgbtqfund.org/donate-1

Not only are members of the LGBTQ+ community more likely to be incarcerated, but they often face high levels of abuse within the prison system. The LGBTQ Freedom Fund uses its donations to post bail for members of the community who cannot afford it.

Gianna Floyd Fund: https://www.gofundme.com/f/gianna-floyd-daughter-of-george-floyd-fund

Gianna Floyd is the daughter of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man killed by Minneapolis Police this week. He was the sole provider in their household, and the family will likely face financial strain as a result of his loss. This fund aims to set up a trust for Gianna and her mother in the wake of George’s murder.

Justice for Breonna Taylor: https://www.gofundme.com/f/9v4q2-justice-for-breonna-taylor

Breonna Taylor was shot EIGHT times in her home when police broke in, unannounced, to the wrong home. Her name has gotten lost in the noise, but justice must also be served to the countless unarmed Black Women who are murdered at the hands of the police.
