New Music Friday - 07/12/2018
As we enter December one has to ask the question, is it too early for Christmas songs? While the answer is obviously no, if you aren't quite ready to whip out some Mariah, here is The Loop's rundown of all the latest music to come out this week.
First up we have a new ballad from ZAYN in 'Good Years' alongside another bop from Toro Y Moi with 'Ordinary Pleasure' and over on the hip-hop side of things we have a new track from British rapper Little Simz on '101 FM' and a match made in heaven with Czarface and Ghostface Killah on 'Iron Claw'.
ZAYN - Good Years
The ex-One Direction member has been trying to make his way in the solo music business for a while now and sadly I don't see 'Good Years' as the track to give him that much-needed push. With a sparse piano instrumental that ZAYN fails to fill with his voice, 'Good Years' is aggressively boring despite having some interesting lyrics.
Toro Y Moi - Ordinary Pleasure
Toro Y Moi has been one of my favourite artists for a while now and over the years his sound has progressed from chillwave to outright funk. This isn't showcased better than on this new bongo bonanza 'Ordinary Pleasure' which combines a bouncy guitar riff with a brilliantly melodic chorus that is as catchy as it is fun. Combine this along with his last single 'Freelance' and this new album Outer peace is shaping up to be a funky ride.
Little Simz - 101 FM
After releasing her fantastic album Stillness In Wonderland in 2016 and a handful of amazing singles this year, Little Simz is shaping up to be one of my favourite UK artists right now and her new track '101 FM' continues this trend. Rapping about her childhood over a synthy and strange beat, the song continues Simz's streak of wonderfully weird bangers, even if the instrumental gets a bit stale towards the end of the track.
Phoebe Bridgers - Friday I'm In Love (The Cure cover)
The woman who never seems to take a break, Phoebe Bridgers, has released a surprise cover of The Cure's iconic track 'Friday I'm In Love' as a part of Spotify's sessions. Taking a more stripped down approach to the 90's slapper, Bridgers favours violins over guitars as her beautiful vocals carry the minimalist instrumental in one of the best covers of the year.
Czarface & Ghostface Killah - Iron Claw
Formed in 2013, Czarface is an underground supergroup formed of duo 7L & Esoteric and Wu-Tang member Inspectah Deck and after their crazy collaboration with hip-hop legend MF Doom earlier this year they are teaming up with another legend in Ghostface Killah on 'Iron Claw'. With a new joint project on the way, 'Iron Claw' sees 7L back with his classic gritty and old school production as the three MC's demolish this track, showing us exactly why they earned their legendary status.
Benjamin Francis Leftwich - Sometimes
With a new album Gratitude on the horizon, the York-based singer songwriter dropped 'Sometimes', a mellow and folky acoustic ballad that is sure to inspire some people to pick up the guitar. While the track doesn't see Benjamin leaving his comfort zone in any way, it is a nice, building experience that proves once again he is one to look out for.
