New Music Friday - 05/10/2018

Another Friday, another cohort of brand new tracks. This week sees the big names showing no sign of slowing down, with alt-pop queen Halsey releasing ‘Without You’, and rising pop heroine Sigrid’s new single ‘Sucker Punch’ making waves. Also on the radar are hip hop heavyweights Anderson .Paak and Kendrick Lamar with their star-studded collaboration ‘Tints’.

‘Without You’ from Halsey carries her trademark heavy pop synths and dancefloor percussion. Assumed to be about the breakup of her relationship with G Eazy, ‘Without You’ is a deeply personal track, and the first to be written under Halsey’s real name, Ashley. It’s her first solo release since 2017: listen below.

South LA rapper Duckwrth’s latest offering ‘Soprano’ is a blinding blend of genres. Jumping from piano ballads, metallic toughness, gospel, and trap, ‘Soprano’ concerns itself with stories of religion, harkening back to Duckwrth’s strict religious upbringing. Duckwrth’s LP, The Falling Man, is expected soon. Listen to the track here.

With a debut record expected in 2019, Norwegian pop artist Sigrid is already an icon. On her new single ‘Sucker Punch’, Sigrid combines elements of pop ballads and anthemic choruses to create an emotive track. Of the song, Sigrid has said that “The song is just a result of our usual way of working: talking, cooking, strolling, singing, dancing, experimenting! It was so fun--just like the track itself.” Listen below.

Fresh off the heels of the brilliant Tell Me How You Really Feel, Courtney Barnett comes through with a surprise, mellow track, 'Small Talk'. Featuring her classic dead-pan delivery and infectious basslines 'Small Talk', much like the name would suggest, sees Barnett making awkward conversation with the listener over a building guitar loop that is difficult not to find endearing. Listen below.

The third single for Joji's upcoming debut album Ballads 1 comes in the form of 'Can't Get Over You' a bouncy collaboration with iconic hip-hop producer Clams Casino. While it doesn't quite reach the emotional heights of his last release, 'Slow Dancing In the Dark', the song provides a nice, bouncy beat as a backdrop for Joji to unload some more of his emotional weight, even if his voice could do with dropping a few layers of effects. Listen below.

In a collaboration written in the stars, Anderson .Paak takes his sound back to his synth-funk roots, recruiting hip-hop legend Kendrick Lamar for the electric 'Tints'. With an album on the way, Anderson .Paak proves once again that he is one of the most interesting voices in hip-hop, using 'Tints' to comment on issues of gun violence in America while also creating one of the liveliest and exciting songs of the year, one which begged to be released in summer.
