After a plethora of applications Livewire have handpicked 5 of UEA's finest bands/artists to grace the stage o the competition. Let's get to know them...
Robust Soul are a five piece made up of 2nd and 3rd year students. They have been playing and writing together for less than a year but in this time have been gigging around Norwich, and independently recorded a debut EP during summer. Their influences are mainly blues and psychedelic rock. They could be described as a mix between Black Sabbath and The Doors, with some added niceness in between. Check out their high energy psychedelic rocky goodness below.
Gladboy are a 3 piece that play a blend of garage rock, jazz and melodic 60's pop music. They met at UEA last year and properly started playing together over the summer where they recorded an EP of demos which has since had several plays on BBC Introducing Norfolk. As well as this they've played sets at Trunchonbury and Norwich Arts Centre so know thier way around a stage. A combination of the style of Nick Cave and the energy of The Cramps, their stage presence is not one to miss. Check out their junkadellic EP below:
Zoka is the stage name of London/Norwich based rapper Nicholas Uzoka. Having only released 2 singles Zoka already sounds like a professional, if you heard one of his tracks of Radio 1 you wouldn't bat an eye. With insightful lyrics and an assured voice Zoka isn't worth missing. Check out his most recent release 'Better Way' below.
Simple City Dress initially formed through Philip Jones (ex-guitarist of Livewire favourites and previous BOTB winners Dazy Crown) and Rowan Burke-Edwards (behind solo project Rusty Traval) both on guitar and vocals, Simple City Dress has since been extended through the recruitment of Bassist Tom Gordon and Drummer Sean Harbottle. Combining 70's stylings and sounds with a 90's attitude and punk spirit, with influences ranging from Grunge and Post-Punk to Blues and Folk, Simple City Dress promise to provide a thoroughly diverse setlist, with individual songs connected by their common heaviness and earnest lyrics. Below you can behold a dreamy track recorded under their old name 'Acoustic Girls'.
Oliver has been playing for 3 years, released two singles on Spotify (one with over 5,000 plays) and has graced many a stage and many a city with his music. His mix of indie rock and songwriter craftsmanship will easily be an instant crowd pleaser. If your a fan of bands like The Stokes, The Courteeners and The Libertines you're bound to be a fan of Oliver's music. You can check out his newest single 'Sirens' below.
