A Prophet

A Prophet is Jacques Audiard’s gut wrenchingly brutal depiction/critique of the French penal system.  Upon arrival, the newly convicted Malik is seized upon by the Corsican mafia who offer him a somewhat taxing ultimatum: become an assassin for us, or we’ll kill you.  The beauty of A Prophet, is the narrative is so well written, and the acting so natural and realistic that you often find yourself thinking “my god, what would I do in his place?”

Brothers

Inspired by a Danish film of the (translated) same name, Brothers is the latest affair from director Jim Sheridan (predominately known for My Left Foot, and, errrm, well, Get Rich or Die Tryin'. Ahem). It is the story of two brothers, Sam (Tobey Maguire) and Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal), Sam is a respectable Captain in the US army with a wife and kids, who is about to be shipped off to Afghanistan. Tommy, on the otherhand, is a good-for-nothing drop out, who has just been released from Prison. Things soon turn upside down though, as Sam's helicopter is shot down and, believing his brother is dead, Tommy steps in to take care of the family. When it is discovered that Sam survied however, can things go back to being the same?

Up in the Air

Up in the air the story of travelling consultant Ryan Bingham (Clooney) who is hired by cowardly companies during bulk firings of their staff. Bingham is a simple man who travels with very little baggage both literally and metaphorically. However his life begins change when newcomer Natalie Keener (Kendrick) introduces a new internet based firing system meaning Bingham will have to give up the travelling he so much adores. Before he does though he is forced into showing Keener the ropes and in this he begins to question the solo nomad existence he previously defended.

Avatar

James cameron's science fiction epic has finally hit the big screen. With more hype than sliced bread it had some very big shoes to fill, yet once again cameron shows that he can not only present worlds which can surpass those of Jackson and spielberg but can get audiences more immersed than an over zelous baptisim. While the story lacks originality, the film does stand by itself in the sheer power of the special effects. The film was made to show audiences the real scope and power of 3D, the jungle setting really allows for this.

Sherlock Holmes

Guy Ritchie avoids the gangsters for a change with his freshest film since his debut. Robert Downey Jr is the eponymous detective and Jude Law is his reliable companion Watson. The pair play well off each other creating a nice chemistry reminding people why Downey Jr is so popular right now and gives Law his best role in years. London is captured wonderfully with an utterly gothic feel. The action while not spectacular is fun and immediate and the film never outstays its welcome.

Harry Brown

Possibly the last lead role for Michael Caine could possibily be one of his best. The story around a pensioner taking revenge of on the hoodies who have taken over his london estate home. A tale of morality which packs a punch is the order of the day with this film. The film is beatuifully shot with an opening inspired by the 'happyslapping' era of young people taking pride of place umong the scenes. Caine captures the essence of the elderly perfectly, i could have been watching i documentary in the opening act of the film.

Forth Kind

The Forth Kind is a story based around the strange goings on in the town of Nome in Alaska. Supposedly based on true events (although since the film’s release the film makers have revealed that these true events were part of a guerrilla marketing campaign) Forth Kind follows Dr Abigail Tyler trying to decode the strange goings on around her husband’s murder, which ultimately leads her to believe aliens are to blame.

Law Abiding Citizen

A story of revenge and suffering, Law Abiding Citizen is a thriller about a seriel killer in reverse: he's already in prison when he commits all but two of his many murders, and in solitary for most of that time. With this seemingly original concept and a headline cast of Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler, Citizen showed great promise for an exciting thriller. Sadly though, the film fails to meet expectations.

Men who Stare at Goats

Based around the true idea that the US military once attempted to create soldier's who could mentally influence their surroundings and famously attempting to kill a goat with their minds, comes a story with a large cast, with Clooney, Bridges, McGregor & Spacey all involved you would expect a high laugh, high quality romp, however the film doesn't fill the shoes it orders, although funny at times, there is a sense that the film is based around an idea and not a story.

Cirque Du Freak

Cirque Du Freak has an all star cast with the ptential of being a truely great film. The story itself revolves around a high schoool boy called Darren, played by Chris Massoglia who makes a deal with circus vampire Larten Crepsley, played by John C. Reilly, to become a half-vampire in order to save his best friend Steve. The cast invoved including Reilly, Ken Watanabe and Salma Hayek give the film potential to be quirky, comical and imaginative. However it fails to deliver in any genre and appears to be thrown together in hope, even including a half hearted love interest for good measure.
